For our one big idea, it begins by modifying the inside of the Sharp center for design. We are proposing to add in suspended ceilings in all applicable areas in order to cut down on heating and cooling costs associated with the massive overhead space, currently only occupied by ducts and pipes. From this original idea, we were able to impliment a second, more personal idea, and a new way for students to share their work and become more intimate with the school. After charting out the layout of all the ceiling tiles and reworking of some of the piping (possibly only adding/removing some fittings) the students would be able to purchase a tile and display some of their work. Instead of just having the plain white ceiling tiles in normal office buildings, purchased tiles would be able to be designed by the students, large photos/paintings etc. (all moderated to make sure appropriate) and will encourage students engagement with the school's environement. We are in the process of working out the financial implications associated with such a project, but are also hoping that after the numbers are worked out, the energy savings and investment of the students would offset that cost, later generating an income if not simply a livelier more creative environment.
