"Not Just Another Brick in the Wall"

Increasingly, researchers are establishing the correlation between indoor air quality and the productivity of workers as well as the health of individuals. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors. Health Canada estimates that Canadians spend more than 80% of their time indoors. In general, a significant proportion of this indoor time is spent within the home, with the time spent in workplaces coming in a close second.

We propose putting living wall system in the great hall of the school. A living wall is a wall system that essentially provides a vertical surface where various plants can be grown. Living walls filter air particulates, improving air quality and help to reduce the urban heat island effect (UHI). Interior walls clean the air and add humidity to the air to compensate for central heating in the winter.

We think adding a Living wall system would be a great addition to the OCAD environment. The improved air quality would greatly improve the health of students and faculty, and the increase of greenery in the school would certainly improve the mood of anyone who enters the building. All of which would improve the productivity of the students and staff of OCAD.

In our presentation we will detail the benefits of a living wall in our school. Also we will investigate the cost of installing such a system, and if it would be physically possible to incorporate a living wall into the existing architecture of the school.
