Reflections On Toby Heaps Lecture

Regarding the Toby Heaps lecture, I was quite impressed with such a huge undertaking coming from very few people (ie himself and Corporate Knights). Since I am not as well versed as others in the language of conservation and measures to help decrease the impact of global warming, the lecture was personally kind of intimidating and much of the stats and facts he mentioned did not make a lot of sense to me.

I notice that he drew many facts and ideologies from An Inconvenient Truth, and was going to ask him how he felt about those who claim that global warming has occured before and this is something rather unpreventable.

I also wasn't altogether sure how he was going to monitor consumption in other countries and keep that monitoring consistent so that it does bring about some change. I don't believe their current plans and status are strong enough yet to bring about that kind of impact. Making goals (reducing emissions until a certain date) has been proposed before and is often postponed by those in positions of higher power.

As an overall reflection of the lecture, I believe this approach of informing people is pretty effective, mostly because it has the ability to attract a larger audience, which in turns creates more support for the cause.

As a personal aside, in the last two years or so I have seen a tremendous cultural move towards GREENER living, both in my time here at OCAD, as well as in the media that I take in. I believe this is a good sign and very progressive.
