[murmur] Ryan&Jay

found by Ryan

Ok here i go...
I found this cool story from Richard Flohill who wrote about a burlesque house
(old strip club) turned into a rock, concert hall in the 70s at Dundas and
Spadina on the North West corner.

213601:285 spadina ave. murmurtoronto.com

He explains that this location, used to be called Victory Burlesque and was the last holdout for burlesque performers in Toronto, after "The Casino" oppositeold city hall on Queen st. . "the Casino" was torn down when the Sheraton hotel along with the new city hall was constructed. After shut down business moved to the Victory burlesque theatre, untill business fell off. With business for the burlesque show slowing , as a result bands like "Rush" unknownto an american audience began to. Managers of "Rush" couldnt get americans into the band, so for 2 years they became concept promoters, building a relationship with the U.S music agencys. Eventually the Canadian "Rush" story caught on to americans. Before this happening big names like "Kiss" and "Iggy Pop" played the Victory Burlesque concert hall... now its a convenient store or something.

OCAD - Making the Green Grade?

Here are some further resources for your projects:

Last year's student projects are on the BIO Blog:
http://bigideasatocad.blogspot.com/

AASHE - The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education:
http://www.aashe.org/stars/

Message from the VP Peter Caldwell:
Very good to hear that this is happening again this year. And it's timely because, as you know, one of the key pillars of our Strategic Plan is sustainability. To that end, I have been asked to head up a new Task Force to look at sustainability issues.

Here are the people for students to talk to at OCAD:

Facilities Planning & Management - for issues relating to buildings, building systems (e.g. hydro, water, lighting, HVAC), overall campus planning, etc.

Peter Lashko, Director - ext 619
Email: plashko@ocad.ca

Rob Pyke, Manager, Building Projects – ext 620
Email: rpyke@ocad.ca

Rick Connoy, Manager, Facilities Maintenance – ext 618
Email: rconnoy@ocad.ca

Campus Services & Security – for issues relating to housekeeping (cleaning), security, waste removal, recycling, etc.

Vicki Brown, Director – ext 623
Email: vbrown@ocad.ca

Lance Straun, Manager, Campus Operations – ext 617
Email: lstraun@ocad.ca

Louis Toromoreno, Manager, Campus Security – ext 622
Email: ltoromoreno@ocad.ca

I am sure that all will assist the student groups however possible. Of course, they are all busy, so the only thing I ask is that they schedule appts with adequate advance notice, and that there not be more of them than necessary – i.e. if there are several individuals interested in the same issue, perhaps they could all come to one meeting.

Nuit Blanche

This Saturday night, experience Nuit Blanche, at OCAD, and throughout Toronto. This is an important community building, all night fun event. Go for the experience! We will be discussing your experiences in class in week 6 -- post your highlights to the blog!

The Economist - "How to deal with a falling population"

Hey guys...
It's Danbee and I thought this article was pretty interesting so i am posting it up for all of you to check it out!
Did you know....
- The panic about resource limitations that prevailed during the 70s and 80s has given way to a new concern: that the number of the people in the world is likely to start falling.
- The impact that people have on the climate is a problem; but the solution lies in consuming less fossil fuel, not in manipulating population levels.
- In Japan, workforce will shrink by a fifth in the next decade- a considerable loss of knowledge and skills.
- The Russian army has had to tighten up conscription because here are not enough young men around.
- Again in Japan, rural areas have borne the brunt of population decline, which is so bad that one village wants to give up and turn itself into an industrial waste dump.

so there you go... now both you and i have more knowledge on the issue of the world today... hope you all enjoyed it and i will see you guys in class!!
ciao~

Murmur Project

One of the murmur numbers was about how a women when she was at the age of nine, remembered when she was with her mother at the time out shopping, She then remember seeing everyone freezing in shock and her mother was squeezing her hand hard. Apparently, everyone was in shock at seeing a black man and a white women walking hand in hand down the street together. The story teller remember being in pain when seeing the reaction of the people around. Even to this day she dislike the racism that is found everywhere.

We were able to find 27 green ears.

Kensington!

Our group decided on this story, that, despite being somewhat brief was one that we really found to be interesting.

The speaker (noting the location, 183 AUGUSTA) begins by explaining that some years ago he and a friend were sharing a basement apartment. The speaker described the dwelling as being a dirty, dank Kensington apartment, and generally dingy, but also noted that it was cheap.

One evening, as he describes, he and his room-mate were watching Friends on a TV that he claims they probably picked up off the curb. During the course of the show, the picture went into bad reception. After fixing the video, the audio disappeared, and was replaced by a supposed argument that was going on between a famous Toronto actor and some other individual.

Strange? Or just someone who mistook a really good drama series for reality and just got mixed TV channels? Hopefully not the latter.

[murmur] in kensington market

Our group enjoyed a beautiful day in Kensington Market! It was a perfect day to explore the memories left behind by the community.
One of our favourite stories was that of Lobster Island. At first glance, 169 Augusta looks fairly normal. The white building is incredibly plain, with little evidence of its occupants, nor its function. But Murmur allowed us to take a look into the past. At one time, 169 Augusta was an after-hours club. A popular destination, people could see theatrical acts by various performers. At one time, certain members of The Kids In The Hall were permanent fixtures at the hangout! The man who left this memory said that one day, the club just disappeared!
The second story left behind was that of a young woman. She recalls the quality and abundance of the Lobster Island seafood market. She points out how difficult it was to find the building, but she and her boyfriend finally located the tiny entrance. Although she was accustomed to the amount of seafood from the east coast, she was overwhelmed with how fresh and cheap the fish was at Lobster Island. She said that together, they had the best and cheapest feast!

all our photos from the day are uploaded here

Murmur- Spadina and St. Andrews St.

Story told by Juho:

One day he was walking on the sidewalk when a girl came and pour water on him, he asked her the reason behind it but all she did was smiled and pour some more water. Then he pushed her into the trash can where he found a wine bottle and pour wine on her. After that she called the Cop saying that Juho was trying to rape her but after investigations the Cop arrested the girl instead.

[[[Fav Mumur Story]]]

Our favourite story was a spooky one! It was about a man named Stuart. He and his family lived at 32 Kensington when his daughter fell asleep one evening while watching some television. In her dream there were 2 children, one boy and one girl. They begged Stuart’s daughter to dance with them until she got tired and fell asleep. When she woke up she thought it was a really strange dream but didn’t think much of it until Stuart came across a baseball card and a diary while renovating the house 3 weeks later. It turns out the baseball card was from 1933 which was valued at $1200 and the diary had a passage in it, written by a young aspiring lawyer who made his sister sign an agreement which promised she would take him to a baseball game on Ladies Night. The boy who owned the diary and the sister that promised a baseball game was believed to be the children in Stuart’s daughter’s dream. How’s that for a ghost story? .. pretty creepy!!

the kensington escapades!!

We hit quite a few sites along the way.. Mike and Rob did kensington st. Katie did Agusta, and Shae and Vin did the remaining sites. We decided our faverote was the story of Fitzroy Cresent, which runs in between Agusta and Kensington. It conatins a row of worker houses with tiny back yards that have been there since kensington was first established as a community. It was originally in habited by Jewish settlers. It now is host to a number of different inhabitants from local store owners, to artists and designers, to older people who have been in the area for decades. They rarely go on sale, partially due to the location, where most people wouldn't even think houses stood. There has been an influx of 'noisy youngsters' to the area, which has degraded the solitude, however the detatched location of the street still shelters it from the main flow of people. It is intriguing that people live down an alley that most people just walk by and disregard. I would post pictures but the ones I have are all hard copies. I will bring them to class for visual aids. Cheers!!!
In the Collage St and Augusta AV there are many stories that one of them was so interesting. The man who was on the phone was telling his story that he saw a big wild deer in 1994 in this place at 3.30am . first of all he thought that it was just a dream but he saw it for a second time. He checked newspaper in next morning to read some news about this event. but there was nothing about it

Murmur Project

We saw 22 of the signs including some that weren't on the list. We chose the story by Emma Segal about the dress store. The entire story seemed irrelevant in the sense that as far as the material investment into putting murmur together it just seemed moderately irrelevant. anyhow this is our posting

Hey, the names Stephen Schoettler and i am in second year graphic design.

198 Spadina Ave- Antonio De Luca

We visited 3 sites in the Augusta area, 4 sites in the Kensington area, 10 sites in the Spadina & Dundas area and 1 site in the Spadina & Queen area.

Our group decided that our favorite story was on Spadina and Queen. This man, named Antonio De Luca, talked about a small alleyway where alcoholics and teenagers engaged with drugs. An eye opener for him was during 5am when the drugs die off and lights turn on, the teenagers would fight over a five dollar bill and kill themselves over it. He was amazed that this was happening and could not believe how they were dealing with their problems. This issue that he encountered surprised him because this never happened before and now it is a problem within the society.

We chose this story because it opens our eyes to the problems that are new to our society, especially drugs and alcohol involved with children.

Murmur

With our group, we had visit Kensington Market and there are many different kind of stories. One of the most interesting Murmur we choose was the one at Spadina Av and Dundas St.

It talks about the old days, how the main show from the New York City was perform, how it was so popular that there is many musical and actor studio. Also, it was so much like New York City, that there's stock and casino too.

However, we have understand more about these wonderful stories and the life they have during that period of time. There's just so much to talk about and you'll never know what had happen before behind the scene from our city Toronto.

Our Group's Favorite Story

We went to around 16 sites, and one of our favourite murmur stories was found on  17 Kensington St.
This is the personal story of Demian Carynnick. He described is as a very sweet and romantic moment between a stranger that he met on Dundas street car and himself. It was like any regular working morning, he got on the same street car on Dundas, and met this girl who he described as, liked him. Then they got off at the same station, and Demian head up to work just as usual, but surprisingly, this unknown girl showed up in his workplace two hours later, and started to have a short but friendly conversation. The conversation ended with Demian told the girl that he was feeling cranky, because he did not have any cup of coffee this morning.

Another hour passed, and the same girl showed up at Demian's workplace again, but with a cup of coffee that she took from the Cafe across the street because her friend works there.

Now they still meet each other once in a while, cool, and friendly.

We fell in love with this story's simplicity and relaxed tone; the wonderful cool attitude of the girl in the story have reminded us of how important and simple it can be to be nice to one another, and to shorten the distance between one another in this community; and we can't wait to hear an ending for this romantic story that beautified our city Toronto.

Murmur

My group's favourite Murmur story was Fitzroy Terrace. This is a small alley that is actually residential. It was originally housing for the English workers in the area, but eventually the workers moved out and immigrants moved in permanently. The name "Fitzroy Terrace" gives the impression of an upscale street, yet these are far from affluent homes. These patchwork buildings have no yards, and are tucked away from the bustling street with barely enough room to park a car. I took a little walk down and snooped in on a couple reading the paper and having coffee with the windows wide open. I can appreciate this type of urban infill and am happy that this community wasn't wiped out for larger housing projects in the 60s.

favourite murmur story

Our trip to Kensington Market was quite the interesting experience, it really gave us a chance to look at the area in a new light. Becoming aware of the amount of history behind each street corner, each building, each storefront made the area really take on a whole new shape and feel.

Our group managed to locate about 15 different murmur location, and among those, our favourite story of the more lighthearted commentaries involving an animal in Kensington Market. This guy was wandering around the streets of Kensington Market in the dead of the night, around 3 or 4 in the morning, and right on the street in front of the laundromat was a deer, or "a real wild deer", as he put it. It was a simple story, but we found the shock of the man seeing wildlife in the middle of downtown and the random nature of the story pretty darn funny. It's an interesting commentary on the urban invasion of nature.

- Danica, Brenda, Aleksandra, and Ellie

Our favourite murmur story

These photos are of a house on 56 Brunswick. The murmur story we heard here was basically about a man who lived on the 2nd floor of the building, and how one night he heard noises downstairs. He went down (without his glasses on) and saw a naked man and woman physically fighting and yelling at each other. He said the fight led to a lot of chasing, screaming, and general nakedness; then somehow the window in the building shattered - the glass had cut the woman. She saw her own blood and started acting crazy, and started to bang on the neighbours' door. Then, the man put his pants back on and wrapped the woman in a raincoat, and brought her to the hospital that was across the street at the time. Turns out, the woman was a prostitute and the man had suspected that she had a knife and was going to steal from her wife's jewelery from her drawer. This was our favourite story of the 20-or so locations we visited mainly for the funny/weird/random factor of the story, and how we really don't know our neighbours. In a sense, the story seems to be a reflection of the colourful and often unusual sights and sounds the city has to offer, as well as a look at human behaviour in the city.

Water Machines

I mentioned this briefly in last week's class, about the invention of a machine that was able to make water out of humidity in the air. I remember seeing it on the Discovery channel or something like that, and it turns out that my memory was real and that I'm not delusional!

Link

The article may differ somewhat from the version that I saw, which focussed heavily on a 'solve-thirst-worldwide' idea.

Here is a Wikipedia article that goes into more detail about the actual machine.

My favorite murmur story!!

Hi everyone! Our group mission was a success! It was great fun to learn about certain areas and we enjoyed listening to the storytelling about each particular location found around Kingston. My favorite Murmur story was told at thirty two Kensington Lane where Stuart Scriber lived with his family. His daughter had a weird experience one night after she had fallen asleep on the couch after watching the television, she was later awoken by a little girl and boy whom she wanted to play hokie pokie with. They played for a little while and after she was tired again she fell back asleep. Stuarts daughter awoke in the morning telling him about her strange experience, wondering if it actually happened or not! A few weeks later after Stuart was renovating the house, he heard something fall behind the chimney. There he found a 1933 Babe Ruth baseball card and a diary. The baseball card ended up being worth $1200.00!!! The diary was a young boy's whom wrote as if he would one day become a lawyer. He had had his sister sign the diary like a written contract saying she would take him to the baseball and pay his way. Stuart believes those things he found belonged to the kids, the kids that had previously visited his daughter in the middle of the night.

I loved this story!! It's also not the only story on hauntings around the Kensington area that can be heard on Murmur if you enjoy hearing scary stories!!! (:

Check this out!!

Hey guys,
For those of you who are too busy or too lazy to check out the Internet websites that Martha has provided, I thought it would be nice of me to summarize one of the websites that i've visited that interested me the most and highly suggest you guys to check it out as well when you have time....haha....
The link of the website is attached to the post so just click on it if you are interested in checking it out. The website is about climate crisis. The reason why i liked this website was because of the opening of the website. The website is introduced by a short film called " An Inconvenient Truth" and the images and the depressing music theme of this film really caught my attention. The film also had a very strong impact on me with very powerful images of the world today. Images of pollution, Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters mainly caused by our (human beings) actions made me realize that the world is in danger and in order to diminish these unfortunate events we need to take actions immediately. They say Global warming is real, it's already happening and it is the result of our activities and not a natural occurence. Glaciers are melting, plants and animals are being forced from their habitat, and the number of severe stroms and droughts is increasing.
SO LISTEN UP!!!
"There is no doubt we can solve this problem. In fact, we have a moral obligation to do so. Small changes to your daily routine can add up to big differences in helping to stop global warming. The time to come together to solve this problem is now!" (http://www.climatecrisis.net/thescience/)
